E Raga Purvi Scale
E Raga Purvi contains 7 notes: E, F, G♯, A♯, B, C, D♯. It has 3 sharps: G♯, A♯, D♯. The step pattern is H–W+H–W–H–H–W+H–H.
A dramatic twilight raga performed as day transitions to night. It shares the b2 and #4 with Marwa but adds a b6, which shifts the mood from expansive to more concentrated and intense — like the sky darkening.
The formula is 1, b2, 3, #4, 5, b6, 7. The combination of major 3rd with b2 and b6 creates two augmented 2nd intervals, giving it a quality reminiscent of the double harmonic scale but with distinct Indian melodic movement. In traditional performance, certain notes must be approached from specific ascending or descending directions.
The two augmented 2nd intervals (b2 to 3 and b6 to 7) sit naturally on the fretboard with 3-notes-per-string shapes. Use directional phrasing — approach the b2 from above and the b6 from below for a more authentic melodic contour. Works well over sustained drones for meditative, intense passages.
