F Enigmatic Scale

FG♭ABC♯D♯EFS3TTTSS
Step pattern H – W+H – W – W – W – H – H

F Enigmatic contains 7 notes: F, G♭, A, B, C♯, D♯, E. It has 2 sharps: C♯, D♯. The step pattern is H–W+H–W–W–W–H–H.

Created by Giuseppe Verdi as a response to a musical riddle, this scale is deliberately "impossible" to classify. It starts with a Phrygian b2 but ascends through a chain of sharps, constantly searching for resolution without finding it. The result is a bizarre, floating quality.

The formula is 1, b2, 3, #4, #5, #6, 7. The Phrygian b2 paired with a major 3rd creates an immediate contradiction. Then the ascending chain of sharps (#4, #5, #6) pulls relentlessly upward before the natural 7th provides the only resolution. Verdi wrote an "Ave Maria" on it to prove it was musable. The ascending version works over altered dominants like 7(#5b9).

The ascending chromatic pull of the sharps makes descending lines sound more natural than ascending ones. Use the #4 (tritone) as a heavy passing note and the b2-to-3 augmented 2nd for instant exotic color. Best for creating tense, "outside" soloing lines in brief bursts.
