D Suspended 4th Arpeggio

Formula R – 4 – 5

The D Suspended 4th Arpeggio arpeggio outlines the notes D, G, A across the entire fretboard. Playing these 3 notes individually creates melodic lines that follow the chord shape.

The sus4 replaces the 3rd with a perfect 4th, creating a classic suspension that begs to be resolved. That 4th wants to fall back down to the 3rd — it's one of the most satisfying motions in music.

The sus4 formula is root, perfect 4th, and perfect 5th (R, 4, 5). The suspended 4th traditionally resolves downward to the major or minor 3rd (Csus4 → C), creating a "suspend and resolve" motion that has been used for centuries. Sus4 chords are especially effective on the 5th chord of the key to amplify tension before resolving home. In modern music, sus4 chords often stand unresolved, creating a sense of openness rather than tension.

Dsus4 and Asus4 are among the first embellishments guitarists learn — just add one finger to the basic open shape. Common open shapes also include Esus4. These chords can be seamlessly integrated into rhythm playing using movable barre shapes to quickly switch between a major chord and its sus4 variant. Pete Townshend made the sus4 hammer-on/pull-off technique iconic in rock guitar.

The sus4 ↔ major toggle is one of the most useful rhythm guitar techniques across all genres. In the CAGED system, the E-shape and A-shape barre chords convert to sus4 easily by adding the 4th on the same fret as the barre. Remember: Csus4 contains the same notes as Fsus2 — they're inversions of each other, which opens up creative voicing possibilities across the neck.
