A♭ 6/9 Chord

Formula R – 9 – 3 – 5 – 6

A♭ 6/9 is built from the notes A♭, B♭, C, E♭, F. The interval from A♭ to B♭ is a major 2nd (2 semitones), from A♭ to C is a major 3rd (4 semitones), from A♭ to E♭ is a perfect 5th (7 semitones), from A♭ to F is a major 6th (9 semitones). This chord contains 3 flatted notes.

The 6/9 chord combines a major 6th and a major 9th with the triad. It has a bright, open, jazzy quality — think of it as the ultimate "happy ending" chord. Many classic jazz tunes end on a 6/9 instead of a plain major.

Built as R, 3, 5, 6, 9, the 6/9 avoids the 7th entirely, which gives it stability without the pull of dominant or major 7th tension. The 6th and 9th together create a lush, complete sound. It's the go-to final chord in big band and swing arrangements.

The most common shapes put the root on the 5th or 6th string with the 6th and 9th ringing on the upper strings. Open-position C6/9 and G6/9 are beautiful and surprisingly easy. Try it as your default ending chord instead of a plain major.
