Step pattern H – 4 – H – H – 4 – H

G Mode 5 contains 6 notes: G, G♯, C, C♯, D, F♯. It has 3 sharps: G♯, C♯, F♯. The step pattern is H–4h–H–H–4h–H.

Messiaen Mode 5 is a compact 6-note scale with 6 possible transpositions. Its wide leaps and tight clusters create dramatic contrasts of space and density.

The formula is 1, b2, 4, b5, 5, 7. Only 6 notes cover the full octave with dramatic jumps — the gap from b2 to 4 (a minor 3rd) followed by the tight b5-5 half step creates a "zoom in, zoom out" effect. At the edge of Messiaen's limited transposition concept, its sparse collection excels at textures of space and silence interrupted by chromatic clusters.

The sparseness is the feature: use wide string skips to emphasize the large intervals. This mode works best as a textural device — arpeggiated chords or pointillistic melodies — rather than as a running scalar line.
