C Mixolydian ♭2 Scale

R♭23456♭78CD♭EFGAB♭CS3STTST
Step pattern H – W+H – H – W – W – H – W

C Mixolydian ♭2 contains 7 notes: C, D♭, E, F, G, A, B♭. It has 2 flats: D♭, B♭. The step pattern is H–W+H–H–W–W–H–W.

An exotic, tense dominant mode that adds Phrygian's dark b2 to an otherwise bright Mixolydian framework. It creates a Spanish-flavored dominant sound with strong forward motion.

The formula is 1, b2, 3, 4, 5, 6, b7. The major 3rd and b7 define dominant quality, but the b2 adds aggressive tension. The b2 wants to resolve down to the root while the b7 wants to resolve up to the 3rd of the target chord, creating dual pull that generates powerful forward motion.

Works over dominant 7th b9 chords. Try the b2-to-root movement on the low strings for a flamenco-jazz feel. The rest of the scale is pure Mixolydian, so you can alternate between exotic b2 phrases and familiar dominant lines within the same solo.
