E Mode 7 Scale

EFF♯GAA♯BCC♯D♯ESSSTSSSSTS
Step pattern H – H – H – W – H – H – H – H – W – H

E Mode 7 contains 10 notes: E, F, F♯, G, A, A♯, B, C, C♯, D♯. It has 4 sharps: F♯, A♯, C♯, D♯. The step pattern is H–H–H–W–H–H–H–H–W–H.

Messiaen Mode 7 is the densest mode, containing 10 of 12 possible pitches. With only 2 notes missing from the chromatic scale, it creates near-chromatic texture with just enough structure to feel organized.

The formula is 1, b2, 2, b3, 4, b5, 5, b6, 6, 7. The two "missing" notes create subtle gaps in an otherwise chromatic texture. Messiaen used it sparingly, recognizing that with 10 notes the distinction from full chromaticism is delicate. It is most effective when the two absent notes are featured prominently in contrast.

With 10 notes, this mode covers nearly every fret in a given position. Its practical value lies in the two missing notes — identify them and use their absence as a compositional constraint. Think of it as "the chromatic scale minus two" rather than trying to memorize a 10-note pattern.
